Two fluffy friends, two very different personalities, and a whole lot of charm! Meet Chewy and Hans Solo, our lovable alpaca and llama duo at Bristol Oaks.
Although alpacas and llamas look similar, they're actually two different animals with unique characteristics. Both belong to the camelid family, which also includes camels!
These two handsome boys bring something extra special to our farm family, and we can't wait for you to meet them!
🌿 What's the Difference Between an Alpaca and a Llama?
Alpacas and llamas both originated in South America, but they were traditionally raised for different purposes.
🦙 Alpacas: Smaller than llamas, alpacas are primarily raised for their soft, luxurious fleece. They typically have shorter, straighter ears and a more compact appearance.
🦙 Llamas: Larger and taller than alpacas, llamas were traditionally used as pack animals to carry supplies through mountainous terrain. They're known for their long necks and distinctive banana-shaped ears.
Fun Facts About Alpacas & Llamas
- They're related to camels! Alpacas, llamas, and camels all belong to the camelid family.
- They communicate through body language. Ear positions, posture, and vocalizations help them communicate.
- They hum! Both alpacas and llamas can make humming sounds to communicate.
- They have padded feet. Unlike cattle and goats, camelids have soft footpads with toenails.
- They can spit! Spitting is usually directed at other animals to establish boundaries or settle disagreements.
- They're social animals. Both species benefit from companionship and interaction with other camelids.

Meet Chewy, our handsome brown Suri alpaca!
Unlike the more familiar fluffy Huacaya alpacas, Suri alpacas have long, silky fleece that hangs in beautiful locks, giving Chewy his distinctive appearance.
Chewy is a special part of the Bristol Oaks family and has enjoyed meeting visitors during our farm events.
With his unusual fleece and adorable face, he's always an interesting animal for guests to learn about.
Fun Fact: Suri alpacas are less common than Huacaya alpacas, and their silky fleece is prized for its beautiful drape and luster.

Color: White and tan
Hans Solo isn't quite the baby he was when he first joined the Bristol Oaks family!
Our handsome white-and-tan llama is growing up and becoming more confident as he learns the ropes of farm life alongside his alpaca companion, Chewy.
With his long neck, expressive face, and curious nature, Hans Solo is a wonderful example of what makes llamas so fascinating.
We love watching him grow and develop his own personality!
Fun Fact: Llamas are generally much larger than alpacas and can weigh between 250 and 450 pounds as adults.
